Self-determination theory and its interface with the therapeutic follow-up of systemic arterial hypertension

Objective: To analyze the structure of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) with an emphasis on its applicability to nurses clinical practice in the context of systemic arterial hypertension (SAH). Methods: Meleis theory evaluation model was applied, encompassing the stages of description, analysis of the paradigmatic origin, and critique through verification of the practical utility of Self-Determination Theory in the therapeutic management of SAH. Results: SDT highlights the importance of autonomy, competence, and social relatedness for human motivation. When applied to SAH treatment, it shows that adherence is more effective when the patient feels autonomously motivated. Health education and empowerment strategies promoted by nurses should foster this internalization, promoting more humanized and sustainable care. Final considerations: SDT proves useful for designing more effective care actions aimed at improving adherence to SAH treatment.
